Sir Isaac Newton
(1642-1727)

Of Prophetic Language Observations on the Prophecies | Biography and Works | Sir Isaac Newton’s Apocalypse

“(The Olivet Prophecy is) the foundation of the Christian Religion”

“Even the immortal Newton, the greatest genius of modern ages, who with powers almost divine discovered the eternal laws which the Almighty had prescribed to his creation, has afforded in his attempt on the Apocalypse, in which he was not more successful than his predeccessors, a mortifying proof of the weakness of human nature.” J.D. Michaelis

(1733) “of that very ancient fable, that John was put by Nero into a vessel of hot oyl, and coming out unhurt, was banished by him into Patmos. Though this story be no more than a fiction, yet it was founded on a tradition of the first Churches, that John was banished into Patmos in the days of Nero.” (Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John)

Preterist Commentaries From Historical Preterism

(On Hermeneutical Principles)
“I observe that Christ and His forerunner John in their parabolic discourses were wont to allude to things present. The old prophets, when they would describe things emphatically, did not only draw parables from things which offered themselves, as from the rent of a garment, … from the vessels of a potter, … but also, when such objects were wanting, they supplied them by their own actions, as by rending a garment, … by shooting, … etc. By such types the prophets loved to speak. And Christ, being endued with a nobler prophet spirit than the rest, excelled also in this kind of speaking, yet so as not to speak by His own actions — [which would have been] less grave and decent — but to turn into parables such things as offered themselves. On occasion of the harvest approaching, He admonishes His disciples once and again of the spiritual harvest. Seeing the lilies of the field, He admonishes His disciples about clothing. In allusion to the present season of fruits, He admonishes His disciples about knowing men by their fruits. In the time of the Passover, when trees put forth their leaves, He bids His disciples, “learn a parable from the fig-tree”. (Sir Isaac Newton,
Commentary on Daniel)

(On the Symbolism of Apocalyptic ; The New Heavens and Earth)
“The figurative language of the prophets is taken from the analogy between the world natural and an empire or kingdom considered as a world politic. Accordingly, the world natural, consisting of heaven and earth, signifies the whole world politic, consisting of thrones and people, or so much of it as is considered in prophecy; and the things in that world signify the analogous things in this. For the heavens and the things therein signify thrones and dignities, and those who enjoy them: and the earth, with the things thereon, the inferior people; and the lowest parts of the earth, called Hades or Hell, the lowest or most miserable part of them. Great earthquakes, and the shaking of heaven and earth, are put for the shaking of kingdoms, so as to distract and overthrow them; the creating of a new heaven and earth, and the passing of an old one; or the beginning and end of a world, for the rise and ruin of a body politic signified thereby. The sun, for the whole species and race of kings, in the kingdoms of the world politic; the moon, for the body of common people considered as the king’s wife; the starts, for subordinate princes and great men; or for bishops and rulers of the people of God, when the sun is Christ. Setting of the sun, moon, and stars; darkening the sun, turning the moon into blood, and falling of the stars, for the ceasing of a kingdom.”  (Observations on the Prophecies, Part i. chap. ii)

(On Daniel 9:27)
“And in half a week he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease; that is, by the war of the Romans upon the Jews:
which war, after some commotions, began in the 13th year of Nero , A.D. 67, in the Spring when Vespasian with an army invaded them; and ended in the second year of Vespasian, A.D. 70, in autumn, September 7 when Titus took the city, having burnt the Temple 27 days before: so that it lasted three years and an half.”

“Thus have we in this short Prophecy, a prediction of all the main periods relating to the coming of the Messiah; the time of his birth, that of his death, that of the rejection of the Jews, the duration of the Jewish war whereby he caused the city and sanctuary to be destroyed, and the time of his second coming: and so the interpretation here given is more full and complete and adequate to the design, than if we should restrain it to his first coming only, as Interpreters usually do. We avoid also the doing violence to the language of Daniel, by taking the 7 weeks and 62 weeks for one number. Had that been Daniel’s meaning, he would have said sixty and nine weeks, and not seven weeks and sixty two weeks, a way of numbering used by no nation.”

“Personally, I cannot but believe these words concerning the end of the times.  One sign of the end will be a remarkable increase in methods of getting about.  Men will travel from country to country in an unprecedented manner.  There may be some inventions which will enable people to travel much more quickly than they do now.”

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

A.R. Fausset (1871)
“for the overspreading of abominations
–On account of the abominations committed by the unholy people against the Holy One, He shall not only destroy the city and sanctuary (Daniel 9:25), but shall continue its desolation until the time of the consummation “determined” by God (the phrase is quoted from Isaiah 10:22,23), when at last the world power shall be judged and dominion be given to the saints of the Most High (Daniel 7:26,27). AUBERLEN translates, “On account of the desolating summit of abominations (compare Daniel 11:31 12:11; thus the repetition of the same thing as in Daniel 9:26 is avoided), and till the consummation which is determined, it (the curse, Daniel 9:11, foretold by Moses) will pour on the desolated.” Israel reached the summit of abominations, which drew down desolation (Matthew 24:28), nay, which is the desolation itself, when, after murdering Messiah, they offered sacrifices, Mosaic indeed in form, but heathenish in spirit (compare Isaiah 1:13 Eze 5:11). Christ refers to this passage (Matthew 24:15), “When ye see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place” (the latter words being tacitly implied in “abominations” as being such as are committed against the sanctuary). TREGELLES translates, “upon the wing of abominations shall be that which causeth desolation”; namely, an idol set up on a wing or pinnacle of the temple (compare Matthew 4:5) by Antichrist, who makes a covenant with the restored Jews for the last of the seventy weeks of years (fulfilling Jesus’ words, “If another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive”), and for the first three and a half years keeps it, then in the midst of the week breaks it, causing the daily sacrifices to cease. TREGELLES thus identifies the last half week with the time, times, and a half of the persecuting little horn (Daniel 7:25). SIR ISAAC NEWTON explains the wing (“overspreading”) of abominations to be the Roman ensigns (eagles) brought to the east gate of the temple, and there sacrificed to by the soldiers; the war, ending in the destruction of Jerusalem, lasted from spring A.D. 67 to autumn A.D. 70, that is, just three and a half years, or the last half week of years [JOSEPHUS, Wars of the Jews, 6.6].” (in loc.)

John Smith
“By the earth, or the word so translated, the prophets frequently mean the land of Judea; and sometimes, says Sir Isaac Newton, the great continent of all Asia and Africa, to which they had access by land. By the isles of the sea, on the other hand, they understood the places to which they sailed, particularly all Europe, and probably the islands and seacoasts of the Mediterranean.”

Manuscript Shows Isaac Newton Calculated Date of Apocalypse

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

JERUSALEM — Three-century-old manuscripts by Isaac Newton calculating the exact date of the apocalypse, detailing the precise dimensions of the ancient temple in Jerusalem and interpreting passages of the Bible — exhibited this week for the first time — lay bare the little-known religious intensity of a man many consider history’s greatest scientist.

Newton, who died 280 years ago, is known for laying much of the groundwork for modern physics, astronomy, math and optics. But in a new Jerusalem exhibit, he appears as a scholar of deep faith who also found time to write on Jewish law — even penning a few phrases in careful Hebrew letters — and combing the Old Testament’s Book of Daniel for clues about the world’s end.

The documents, purchased by a Jewish scholar at a Sotheby’s auction in London in 1936, have been kept in safes at Israel’s national library in Jerusalem since 1969. Available for decades only to a small number of scholars, they have never before been shown to the public.

In one manuscript from the early 1700s, Newton used the cryptic Book of Daniel to calculate the date for the apocalypse, reaching the conclusion that the world would end no earlier than 2060.

“It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner,” Newton wrote. However, he added, “This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, and by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail.”

In another document, Newton interpreted biblical prophecies to mean that the Jews would return to the Holy Land before the world ends. The end of days will see “the ruin of the wicked nations, the end of weeping and of all troubles, the return of the Jews captivity and their setting up a flourishing and everlasting Kingdom,” he posited.

The exhibit also includes treatises on daily practice in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. In one document, Newton discussed the exact dimensions of the temple — its plans mirrored the arrangement of the cosmos, he believed — and sketched it. Another paper contains words in Hebrew, including a sentence taken from the Jewish prayerbook.

Yemima Ben-Menahem, one of the exhibit’s curators, said the papers show Newton’s conviction that important knowledge was hiding in ancient texts.

“He believed there was wisdom in the world that got lost. He thought it was coded, and that by studying things like the dimensions of the temple, he could decode it,” she said.

The Newton papers, Ben-Menahem said, also complicate the idea that science is diametrically opposed to religion. “These documents show a scientist guided by religious fervor, by a desire to see God’s actions in the world,” she said.

More prosaic documents on display show Newton keeping track of his income and expenses while a scholar at Cambridge and later, as master of the Royal Mint, negotiating with a group of miners from Devon and Cornwall about the price of the tin they supplied to Queen Anne.

The archives of Hebrew University in Jerusalem include a 1940 letter from Albert Einstein to Abraham Shalom Yahuda, the collector who purchased the papers a year earlier.

Newton’s religious writings, Einstein wrote, provide “a variety of sketches and ongoing changes that give us a most interesting look into the mental laboratory of this unique thinker.”

It appears to me that Newton was reluctant to assign deity to Christ. While he refers to Christ in many of the prophetic and New Testament decriptions, such as Lamb of God, Son of God etc., he falls short of seeing Christ as the eternal God. Paul tells us in Colossians that “..in Christ dwells the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” And Jesus himself told Peter “..he who has seen me has seen the Father.” Newton apparently could conceive ,(though the scriptures are clear), in one God existing as three persons. Newton refuses to accept the eternal, immutable attributes of the Father as being applicable to the Son and the Holy Spirit. He disagreed with Athanasius the Christ is of the same substance as the Father. He never makes mention of being Born Again!

He was a very clever man. I’m very much interested in how he has found scriptures in daniel and revelation relate to the greek and roman empires, and also the rise of the catholic church, and other important events. What i’m most interested in is if he has written about any events that have happened in the future from his time, and the 20th and 21st century. In particular, perhaps the world wars and israel. If i could find any matches for what has ACTUALLY happened and what he has predicted, then i’d trust what he says more.

To the person who keeps asking, “What did he INVENT”, please look up the name Isaac Newton in an encyclopedia. Newton isn’t known as an inventor (in the sense that YOU, I suspect mean it), but as, among other things, the discoverer of the laws of gravity. He also “invented” mathematical stuff such as Integration, Differentiation (which is over most people’s heads, but vital to phsyics and science). He was a brilliant man who generally kept his Christian beliefs (and massive amount of writings!) quiet because of the age he lived in.

Sir Isaac Newton did invent something! The telescope!Newton’s initial lectures as Lucasian Professor dealt with optics, including his remarkable discoveries made during the plague years. He had reached the revolutionary conclusion that white light is not a simple, homogeneous entity, as natural philosophers since Aristotle had believed. When he passed a thin beam of sunlight through a glass prism, he noted the oblong spectrum of colors–red, yellow, green, blue, violet–that formed on the wall opposite. Newton showed that the spectrum was too long to be explained by the accepted theory of the bending (or refraction) of light by dense media. The old theory said that all rays of white light striking the prism at the same angle would be equally refracted. Newton argued that white light is really a mixture of many different types of rays, that the different types of rays are refracted at slightly different angles, and that each different type of ray is responsible for producing a given spectral color. A so-called crucial experiment confirmed the theory. Newton selected out of the spectrum a narrow band of light of one color. He sent it through a second prism and observed that no further elongation occurred. All the selected rays of one color were refracted at the same angle. These discoveries led Newton to the logical, but erroneous, conclusion that telescopes using refracting lenses could never overcome the distortions of chromatic dispersion. He therefore proposed and constructed a reflecting telescope, the first of its kind, and the prototype of the largest modern optical telescopes. In 1671 he donated an improved version to the Royal Society of London, the foremost scientific society of the day. As a consequence, he was elected a fellow of the society in 1672. Later that year Newton published his first scientific paper in the Philosophical Transactions of the society. It dealt with the new theory of light and color and is one of the earliest examples of the short research paper.

Isaac Newton was a Unitarian, this proves that he was truely one of those called by God the father to follow Christ his son. This is because he understood that Christ was the son of God, this is something that only God the father reveals to people who are to follow Christ. Isaac understood that Catholic and Protestant leaders were liars and taught that there was 3 co-eternal God’s who made up a tri-unity, refered to as the trinity. This erronous doctrine ws created at the council of Constantinople in the year 381AD. When Protestantism began it was due to people like Issac Newton, who understood Greek and could read early Greek bibles and see the difference between corrupt copies of the bible like the original king James Version which contains forgeries and insertions to try to support the trinitarian postion of these false teachers. The catholics sent the Jesuit Martin Luther who stoped the reformation by taking over as the leader of it, Luther cunningly allowed for a reform but only back as far a Constantinople. The result of this clever plot to stop Protestantism understanding the truth, was that Luther insured that pagan Sunday worship, pagan Easter and pagan Xmas and the pagan trinity was kept as a doctrine of the masses. The councils of: Nicea (325AD) Laodicea ( 366AD) Constantinople (381AD) and Chalcedon (451AD) changed the truth of the bible from the worship of one true God, and the keeping of his laws, holydays and 7th day sabbaths, to that of pagan worship of the tri-union of the mystery god who is worshipped on the 1st day of the week, (the complete opposite of God law the father of Joshua (Jesus) and the father of all the other Elohim (sons of God) and all mankind. The trinity doctrine is completely insane and to try to make you not care to examine it they say ah! its a mystery! The truth is that they cannot explain it because it is unexplainable, its a lie. God is the father, the son is a subordinate god, of which there are many. For obedience to the father the son was appointed eternal life by the father who alone is immortal (1Timothy 6:16). The angels are not immortal, nor does man have an immortal soul. God the father alone has immortality and appoints it to those who obey him by keeping and delighting in his laws. The trintity doctrine makes Christ into a mad man who sent part of himself to earth to be a sacrifice to himself. He was not really on earth because part of himself was up in heaven taking down to his other part on earth. The part of himself that was down on earth prayed to himself that was in heaven and asked himself questions, he pleaded with himself to remove the part where he dies on the cross, the says ok if its your will I will go there and died so be it. This mockery of the truth by these teachings insert the obvious conclusion that Christ never really died. How could he if part of himself was up in heaven. Death means the absense of life, there is no thoughts or memory in the grave YOUR DEAD. but they teach he raised himself from the dead. John Nicholl WWW.CCG.ORG

Einstein “stands on the shoulders of the giant” genius of Newton though. Newton wouldn’t have time for this foolishness. Neither do I. I am doing research, so I am outta here (lol)

The title states Isaac Newton calculated the date of the Apocalypse. We know he did not do that.

It is interesting that a man (Isaac Newton) who was so against futuristic use of information of any kind would do this sort of thing (use the number 2060 as a date it had to happen after). I wonder what specific mathematical process he used to arrive at this number. He does explain why he did it, but it was so against his belief to do it. His contention was that scriptures were to be used to show that God knows all and when events happen the scriptures confirm it with his word. When men played with the future and used his word to predict it they were not doing the right thing.

The life of Moses was 120 Years and that was a standard bearer set by God for the life of man. Moses, one like the Son of Man, represents a strong force. When you take the time Israel was given its deed by those who won the war officially 1948 and add 120 you get 2068. When you add seven years the time of tribulation in the book of Revelation to the 2060 you get 2067. That floored me when I first heard that number and Isaac Newton’s calculation.

The bottom line is no one knows the time or date of the end not the angels or the Son (Jesus Christ) only the Father. However, Isaac Newton had no idea when Israel would acquire the homeland.

By the way, Isaac Newton would not have signed the Nicene Creed and I would not have signed it either. No one has seen the Father and lived. The Son is the closest anyone has been to the Father in being. Jesus did not pray to himself and instructs us to pray to the Father (Our Father) His and mine and yours if you want it. The Father has given the Son all Power and Authority so that means when you give all power and authority you must have it to give. Once the task is complete and all enemies are destroyed death being the last he hands the Kingdom back the Father and we are all in all. Doctrines of men once they get established are very difficult to break. But the word of God, with the Spirit’s understanding is a double edged sword and alive.

Of course, Israel returning to its homeland would have made him (Isaac Newton) jump for joy. He would have had his pen writing to everyone about that event and proving it with scripture.

Jesus is Lord!
