INTRODUCTION TO THE TRIBULATIONS OF BEING A FORMER FULL PRETERIST
More on this phenomenon at bottom & Regressive Preterism
“if you speak with Kenneth Gentry or Gary DeMar or any of those guys they will tell you the minute you take a stand, it is like dying the death of a thousand emails because it’s like they never stop.”
Dee Dee Warren on Hanegraaff
These days, it has become common for people to leave full preterism and write about why. There is no particular doctrinal system to which ex full preterists go. Some choose futurism, some partial preterism, and others to a progressive Idealism which takes all of the good that Preterism has to offer, while keeping it in the proper context — so as to not declare the types and shadows to be the primary substance of prophecy (which is sometimes called ‘idolatry’). more info..
Hyper: Larry Siegle – New Wine, Old Wineskins (2009) “I do believe that some statement must be made to provide a sense of balance to the recent departure from (full) Preterism of some, back from whence they came. These actions are neither new, nor are they surprising as often is the case when the strongholds of “tradition” are neither broken, nor forsaken. . The greatest error of Preterism is in our reluctance to “kill the beast” of allegiance in the hearts and minds of the people to their vain “traditions” and obsessions with conformity to the doctrines and practices of those who created the corpses of denominations that are dying all around us today… When I heard of the recent departure of some within the community my honest reaction was a deep sense of sadness in the very depth of my being.” (Don’t forget that a good percentage of former full preterists did not “go back” at all, but went forward by applying a preterist approach to an updated hermeneutic, making a more mature theology.)

It still remains the largest volume ever written on the subject. Max was the first person in history to attempt a full-fledged consistent application of “all prophecy was fulfilled” by the time of A.D. 70. You can’t site J.S. Russell, Milton Terry, or Ernst Hampden-Cook (all 19th century writers). They were not Full Preterists. They were Preterists. Preterism has a long history. Full Preterism goes back to Max King in the late sixties.”

Amen” (Eph. 3:21). Does this sound like a man that expected his generation to be the final generation? Hardly.”

11/16/12: Matthew 16:27-28 “Supposedly, these verses go a long way in demonstrating the Hyper Preterist contention that all prophecy was fulfilled in AD 70… However, if it is conceded that these verses do, in fact, teach the idea that the Son of Man’s “coming in his kingdom” is to be related solely, that is, exclusively to the razing of Jerusalem in the Jewish War of 66-70 AD, then the Hyper Preterist thinks he or she has virtually demonstrated the point that all prophecy was fulfilled by this time.”

9/5/12: Position Paper #1: The Olivet Discourse “We can all agree that the material here includes the razing of Jerusalem by the Roman armies in the Jewish War of 66-70 A.D. The question before us is, Can all of the gathered materials in the Gospel discourses exclude further future descriptions post 70 A.D.?” (Launching a new scholarly direction with regard to meanings.. Well worth the subscription cost.)

5/1/12: Scholar, Philip Mauro “This is far more acceptable in “explaining” what appears to some as a unsteady stream of Church History. There is a steady stream. It didn’t start in AD 70. It started with the arrival of Messiah; with his pouring out the Spirit.”

3/24/12: An Easy Way to Defeat A Hyper Preterist | An Easy Way to Defeat a Hyper Preterist: Part 2 “We may certainly argue that “the death is destroyed” (καταργήσαντος μὲν τὸν θάνατον – 2 Tim 1.10). But, this is only in consideration of the powers in submission to Christ, the man. “death no longer has dominion over him in that he no longer dies.” This is due to his resurrection. Notice, too, that the aorist used in 2 Tim 1.10 is before AD 70. Jesus destroyed “the death” at the cross and resurrection. He nailed it to the cross. He made an open show of it. Death was defeated when Jesus came out of that tomb. “

10/10/11: Degrading the Gospel “It is a stated dogma of Full Preterism: history, procreation, cannot ever, ever, ever, ever end. There can be no “may” or “it might”, or any inference that God “may” according to some inforeseen plan that is known only to him end history or procreation. There is no “may.” Siegle and Green mean, very clearly, that history and procreation is infinite. The Bible teaches this, they say. It is a necessary, logically deduced conclusion derived from the other aspects of Full Preterist doctrine.”
-
9/5/11: Why is Full Preterism Dangerous? “Being a Full Preterist, by some, is a “gift” from God. This is not far from “intiates” who “only” understand the Bible through the understanding of “revelation” given to them that the rest of the Church (which is blind) does not have. This is Danger Number 1. It is, of course, true that “faith” in Jesus Christ (salvation) requires the work of the Spirit upon those whom God has called. But, to say that a particular doctrine of a particular group with a particular eschatology requires a secret “insight” that others are not “blessed with” is, well, kind of loopy. Whatever happened to simply studying and coming to conclusions?”

I walked away a year ago, after studying Preterism for 3 years. Since then I have found that many others have also found F&HP fool preterism lacking. If you have not come to that conclusion, I can only encourage you to keep studying the Scriptures, for in them you will still find the Words of Life! Eternal Life still to be rewarded to the faithful upon their resurrection at the future appearing of Jesus Christ when we shall receive glorified bodies! If you as a preterist do not have that hope, I feel sorry for you, for of all men, you have no hope for according to F&HP your hopes have all been realized in 70AD”

HyP reaction: “I wouldn’t blame him for retreating to the safety of numbers while he resolves his doubts. And it certainly doesn’t give more credence to the former view he held either. If he hasn’t seen that the perfection of the 1,000 yrs is a period whereby the perfect number 10 is multiplied 3 times (another perfect number), to refer to a unknown period of time in which God is working all things spoken to its fulfillment, well perhaps he hasn’t considered it beyond the literal scope. Such literalism does tend to create a stumbling stone that encourages blindness. Faith would help cure that for him.”

Many Christians think that there can be no such legitimate basis. They fear that the loss of an objective and absolute moral standard will result in complete moral subjectivity and relativity. I understand this fear because such a world would be a dreadful place indeed. Fortunately, this is a false dichotomy, and there is a middle way.”

Review of “When Shall These Things Be” – “I was a hyper-preterist. Then I read this book. I read it in order to refute it. I could not. I can attest to the accuracy of the contributor’s statements regarding hyper-preterism, and I’m thankful I was pulled from the clutches of it before I had sunk deeper. This book constitutes the first detailed and in-depth response to the movement known as “full preterism” but better called “hyper preterism.” Naturally, because it is the first, it will stumble in some areas. But there are also positives.

Review of “The End of All Things” – “Seraiah’s book is a direct theological response to hyper-preterism, and it does its job well. So far I have not found one response to this book or to Mathison’s, that is anywhere near the same league, in terms of theology and scholarship.”

While the resurrection of the body is certainly a ‘hope’ for Christians, it is not the end all be all. An Apology to the Public Regarding Preterism (August 26, 2010) “The online Preterist community is an embarrassment on many levels. Hence, one of the reasons i wanted to take a break and reassess things.”

Semper Reformanda Full Preterism (2010) “I believe leaving the community and being inactive elsewhere (not entirely, but to a large degree) helped position me now into the role of an ‘outsider’ in regards to full preterism. Technically, I wasn’t an outsider. Practically, I was. Instead of having my head buried in the sand and getting immersed with all the in-house scuffles, I was now able to step back and look at the bigger picture…and I didn’t like what I saw. I blogged about this, an apology which has now been featured at the infamous PreteristArchive, a site ran by another former full preterist, Todd Dennis.”

If any full preterist contests that they have, then all they have to do is simply provide the link here to either the work online or to a book they have published. It doesn’t exist.” // “And since no full preterist has done it ~ then why in the world would any full preterist get upset with me for stepping back and saying, “dang. I don’t know about this full pret stuff anymore”? Why in the world would anyone get upset with me for wanting to exercise more CAUTION and to stop being dogmatic about a viewpoint that basically hasn’t answered much of squat?”

In Defense of Atheistic Morality I seemingly woke up one morning and realized that my life would be no different, practically, without God. I made all of my decisions based on the assumption that the universe operates by simple cause-and-effect. My hopes did not involve God’s intervention. My sense of “right and wrong” did not come directly from the Bible or any other Christian source. In fact, as I’ve said since then, the word ‘God’ had become meaningless to me. I had no idea what it even meant

Why delectatio Dei? “Lately I have come to really hate the word ‘preterist’ .. the word focuses on looking backward at a time when I am focused on looking forward (not without looking backward as well, of course). And third, while I still read many of the eschatological passages of scripture in a very similar (though in many cases not the same) way as others in that community, the language of the preterist community is woefully deficient and unless it changes it will never be able to project an adequate picture of the kingdom of God. That last statement is pretty strong, but I believe it just that strongly. Many of you may already agree and so I’m not going to list the reasons here, but if any of my preterist friends want to talk about it we can discuss it in the comments. So, I am not going to use this word to describe myself anymore.”

My Journey From Religion to Rationalism “In my Christian life, I was often a teacher, but never a preacher in the traditional sense. I did write and publish (in 1994) a book about the New Testament that helped start an ongoing movement in Christianity called Preterism. I began writing the actual text of the book in 1990, and decided the only way this book would actually become published was if I produced it myself. In order to control the production of my book completely, I formed my own publishing company, New Light Publishing, in 1994. “Prophecy Fulfilled – God’s Perfect Church” was published in that year. All during this time, I assumed that I and a few family members were the only ones who knew and held to the preterist view. Interestingly, however, just prior to publication, I found out I was not alone! There were many others who had come to essentially the same conclusions independently of one another, and had formed an ongoing community with journals, seminars, and other connections. Kingdom Counsel (now the International Preterist Association) held a preterism seminar in Pennsylvania in the summer of 1994 and I attended it to introduce my book.”

The Anti-Church Movement (Hyper-Preterism) (2004) “These times of refreshing are still to come (on a cosmic scale), as reported by the prophets (Acts 3:19). Hyper-Preterists would like to discuss this in terms of a subjective, inward, and mystical “refreshing”, but that ignores the very historical, geographical description and context in which these prophecies were couched originally. It is every generation’s job within the Church to seek to hasten the coming of the Day of Christ.”
Todd Dennis: Idealism (2006)
– Founder and Curator of PreteristArchive.com – Started online full preterist movement in 1996, but after a considerable amount of studies determined that full – not partial – preterism represent the “half-way point” in eschatological studies… resolving that Jesus Christ and His work is the true focal point of all Bible prophecy. AD30-70 is not the substance of fulfillment, but is the type and shadow of Christ’s work in transitioning His people from “old” to “new”

Hyper Preterism’s AD70 Focal Point for Redemption and the New Covenant is Fundamentally Different From Christianity’s Focal Point of the Cross (2009) “When the life of Jesus was draining away on the cross, He Himself noted that the redemptive work had been accomplished, in saying “it is finished”. Finished (Tetelestai, from the verb teleo) means “to complete, to accomplish”. Though some HyPs may try to diminish the meaning of the cross and Jesus’ declaration prior to His sacrificial death (which diminishment in itself serves as a litmus test for error), it was of the utmost significance. In fact, in order to maintain continuity with Christianity, it must remain the central focus. To diminish the centrality of the cross for redemptive accomplishment is to fundamentally alter the message that has been handed down and delivered throughout all generations. To diminish the cross event is not just a small matter of end times disagreement; Rather, it is an attack on the very foundations of Christianity.”

Todd Dennis – Former Hyper Preterist Speaks Out (2010) “As Dennis has patiently waited, giving the hyperpreterist movement the benefit of the doubt as if maybe they were just going through growing pangs, the movement has been increasingly moving further & further away from anything that we would recognize as historically Christian.” (A good analysis of my departure from full preterism in 2006. Beats what was the contemporaneous analysis, for sure!)

On Leaving Full Preterism After A Decade (And The Doctrinal Advancement Which Comes From Properly Seeing AD70 As Symbol, Not Substance) (2008) Though full preterist systems don’t deny that spiritual truths can be applied from the events of AD70, the idealist takes exactly the opposite view — that AD70 itself was an application (outward show) of eternal spiritual realities – and was not the Substance in itself. (Not “Re-Fulfillment”!) ..The most common complaint against the full preterist view is its inability to answer the “what now?” questions… but there is a concern that runs much deeper. By identifying the corporate “consummation of the ages” as having been settled for all time in AD70, the individual believers’ “transition period” is removed from today, being made a first century reality alone. This error neglects the importance of the “glory to glory” process at work in the life of the believer, and chooses rather to accept that there is no sin, death, or devil to be contended with today. In short, full preterist doctrine chooses the corporate over the individual, and this betrayal results in much suffering.”

Matthew 26:64 is NOT a “Preterist Time Indicator” Pointing to AD70 “In short, the usage of “Apo Arti” in Matthew 26:64 [Apo (“from” – Strongs 575) and Arti (“now on” – Strong’s 737)] is highly suggestive of the themes that have been previously offered at this blog ; that is, a series of revelatory recognitions of the power and glory of Jesus Christ’s dominance by friend and foe alike. Though the typically pret-friendly Weymouth translation would like to make Jesus say “later on, you will see..” this is not really honest. I would rather say that it was simply a mistake, but I find it impossible to believe that neither Richard Francis Weymouth (“If this belief ever obtains general acceptance the earlier date of the Apocalypse will also be regarded as fully established. For it will then be seen that the book describes beforehand events which took place in 70 A.D.”) nor Earnest Hampden-Cook (co-editor and author of “The Christ Has Come”) were aware of the importance of this passage regarding their Preterist assumptions. However, not only is there no sense of futurity in this very emphatic Greek phrase, but rather we

Matthew 10:23 is NOT a “Preterist Time Indicator” pointing to AD70 “It has become a working assumption of Hyper Preterism that the “coming” passages in the New Testament refer to AD70. And the eisegetical presupposition that Matthew 10:23 is a “(Hyper) Preterist time indicator” is considered to be unassailable, even though there is not a hint of reference to AD70 in the text or context of the chapter from which to support this conclusion.”

Israel’s History a Type – From Beginning to Telos (AD70) “Sometimes, however, in an attempt to “confirm” a prophecy, a rush to judgment is made, whereby a mistake brings disrepute upon the supposed author. This happens often regarding supposed prophecies about “the end of the world.” For almost 2,000 years, futurist Christians have predicted the end of the world in their near futures, only to have their expectations crushed when the earth did not blow up on cue. Repeated failures have brought an odium of shame to the Bible and the Lord, even though the fault was entirely with those who mistook the prophecies for something they were not. With Hyper Preterism, the miscues usually accrue in the other direction — declaring something as completed when in fact it was not.”
REACTIONS
“I do not believe that Todd Dennis is dangerous, but he seems to be motivated by an irrational zeal which is clouding his mind and controls him and all he does. Good people and ideas are judged by their fruits, and so far, the fruits of “preterist idealism” seem to be hate, injustice and elitism. The very fact that a guy uses his divorce and personal life to rationalize attacking other people should tell you enough about his theology and his relationship with the Creator so that we can only pray for him to recover and do what’s right in relation to those around him, his family and people he is using to further whatever agenda he has created in his mind. Please either reach out to Todd if you know him, or pray for him so that he is redeemed and healed of his hate and evil plans. “
Philip S. Desprez (1865)
– Wrote second-oldest known Full Preterist book, but left that view for a more critically mature approach, built a wide reputation as a higher critic of the books of Daniel and Revelation. His take on full preterism after his conversion away: “something more was intended by the coming itself and the unearthly scenes with which it is said to be accompanied, than the destruction of Jerusalem and the subsequent establishment of Christianity. However momentous the ruin of their city might have been to the Jews, it could not have materially affected the Gentile converts to whom the warnings relating to the advent were principally addressed.”

Daniel; or, The apocalypse of the Old Testament (1865) Written after his conversion away from full preterism // Added a PDF File “We are not ashamed to confess our inability to reconcile the proximity under which these phenomena are announced with the actual course of events. We seem to be painfully conscious of the existence of a serious discrepancy between the latter-day anticipations of the New Testament and what might be considered their due and legitimate fulfilment: a conviction arising not from a superficial or deceitful handling of the sacred text, but from a reverent and careful examination, extended over many years, of this particular question ; and we think it the part of exegetical consistency to endeavour to grapple with it, before we stereotype with too great confidence traditional opinions which appear unable to stand the test of searching and out-spoken criticism. “

Full Preterism vs. Idealism: Part Three – Full Preterism’s “New” Gospel “So what kept men from God. What stood in the way of God and man. The law of Moses? By no means. If so Paul would have taught that it was in the destruction of Judaism that would remove the veil. Instead Paul said it was the Spirit that removes the veil. Full Preterism must either submit to the idea that the law is still in existence for everyone who is not in Christ, or submit to Universalist interpretations. The law of Christ is the reality of the shadow law of Moses. Removing the law of Moses, a copy, a shadow, does not remove the veil. Only the Spirit removes the veil. “
-
Full Preterism vs. Idealism: Part Two – Full Preterism’s Achilles Heel “The issue here is the consistency in the approach. The devil is gone and inactive, irrelevant and being tormented, and so is death. The same punishment for both MUST produce the same results. Do I really need to do a study on Romans to show that the death from Adam is still going on today? Do I need to state anymore that the only way for Full Preterism to answer the devil and death problem is to invent a “new law” that humans break after AD 70, and a “new death” to explain the lake of fire that Universalists get wrong? Reformed Full Preterism must either depart from the Reformed grounding, lead to a Universalist approach, or lead to an Idealist approach.”

Preterism and ‘Emergent Eschatology’ (2009) “I personally see a strong possibility of Preterism and Emergent/Emerging eschatology becoming eventually synonymous. Do you think this is a possibility, and is there enough space for all of us to learn from each other and grow together?”

2/16/13: This is Where Hyper Preterism Logically Goes (2013) “the fact is that no one, and I mean no one, ever attempted a more systematic treatment of modern Full Preterism than Max King’s The Cross and the Parousia of Christ.

1/24/13: Romans 13 and the Day of the Lord (2013) “Paul plainly expected many ages and “generations” to come: “to Him is the glory in the assembly in Christ Jesus, to all the generations of the age of the ages. Amen” (Eph. 3:21). Does this sound like a man that expected his generation to be the final generation? Hardly.”

12/4/12: Why I Left Preterism (2012) Excerpted citations and reviews archived below. (Just bought the pdf and am amazed at the level of scholarly substance laying out the unintended consequences of Full Preterist doctrine.
-
11/16/12: Matthew 16:27-28 “Supposedly, these verses go a long way in demonstrating the Hyper Preterist contention that all prophecy was fulfilled in AD 70… However, if it is conceded that these verses do, in fact, teach the idea that the Son of Man’s “coming in his kingdom” is to be related solely, that is, exclusively to the razing of Jerusalem in the Jewish War of 66-70 AD, then the Hyper Preterist thinks he or she has virtually demonstrated the point that all prophecy was fulfilled by this time.”
-
9/5/12: Position Paper #1: The Olivet Discourse “We can all agree that the material here includes the razing of Jerusalem by the Roman armies in the Jewish War of 66-70 A.D. The question before us is, Can all of the gathered materials in the Gospel discourses exclude further future descriptions post 70 A.D.?” (Launching a new scholarly direction with regard to meanings.. Well worth the subscription cost.)
-
5/1/12: Scholar, Philip Mauro “This is far more acceptable in “explaining” what appears to some as a unsteady stream of Church History.

IF THE BIBLE ANTICIPATES WORLD-WIDE CONVERSION.. WOULDN’T THAT BE A PROPHECY AS OF YET UNFULFILLED?” Yes, Todd, it would.” | Part 2

Response to Green on Towards a Fuller Preterism (11/3/10) – “Green here asserts that “in accordance with BIBLE PROPHECY” we are still “growing”. So, let’s think logically here. If BIBLE PROPHECY is still BEING fulfilled (still growing as the PROPHETS said) beyond A.D. 70, then…..well, you can do the math. But, in case you missed that, Green says it again: the Bible “describes” the age to come. Now, this was the whole point of my paper, was it not. But, if this is true, then the Bible speaks “beyond” A.D. 70. And, if it so speaks (prophesies), then what exactly is the problem, Dave? You have made my point: Bible Prophecy was not “all” fulfilled in A.D. 70! Q.E.D. If it “describes” (read, prophesies), then, clearly, all prophecy is not yet fulfilled. This underscores my point: ongoing FULFILLMENT. Ask a Covenant Creationist if prophecy is, in any way, shape, or form, “being fulfilled” today. It is THIS TYPE of FP that I am attacking. It’s not a straw man.” Green: “Sam believes that the Second Coming and Resurrection of the Dead will be consummated in our future. Does he not? If so, then it follows that he is not a full preterist. “

Mike Sullivan, David Green, Ed Hassertt: SAM FROST’S DEPARTURE FROM FULL PRETERISM INTO THE PARTIAL PRETERIST / PRETERIST IDEALIST WORLD OF TALBOT (9/10/2010) “In Sam’s end of the world article he claimed that Full Preterist’s understand the long ages of Isaiah 65 as teaching “spiritual abundance.” I followed this up with asking Sam if this meant that he changed his interpretation of the passage (to the FP one), or if he was being misleading in that he was still holding onto a PP Postmillennial (PPP) hermeneutic (it is spiritual [“spiritual abundance”] AND literal – the long ages will be seen as the passage is “fully manifested/fulfilled” over time). Again, Sam dodged the question. How scholarly, respectful, and loving.”

Sam Frost: “no Preterist has been able to say to me that ‘nothing changes’ when we physically die. In other words, it is correct to say ‘I am glorified’ today in the Body of Christ, as He is Glorified. However, is this glorification FULLY MANIFEST or APPARENT today? Now, ask yourself: will it be in heaven when I physically die? Will anything change? Will I still be the same, old bumbling Sam Frost that I am here on earth? Will I still be subject to occasional sin? Error? If not, why not? Do I get ‘something else’ in Heaven? It is not so much that we ‘get’ something else, but that that which WE HAVE (II Cor. 5.1-2) will be ENTIRELY in FULL OPERATION – FULL ON POWER. If this, then, is so, then one must concede the argument of ‘fullfillment already – manifestation not yet’ (my argument in a nutshell).”

Full Preterists, do you know of any TRULY former full preterists, 1/7/11 “LGBT, that you know of none, only demonstrates for all, your limited knowledge, or lack of unbiased research into the subject, or your willingness to play the typical F&HP game of identifying anyone who has walked away from fool preterism as having never been a full preterist in the first place, as if that proves your point.

My Journey: A Funny Thing Happened (2000) “It was in October 1996, when I came to Preterism, that I started having these very serious doubts and I just couldn’t get rid of them. I kept trying to bury them, but they just kept coming back. I’m glad I found these errors and I’m grateful to that man who first posted the list of errors. He had a lot of courage. He met with a lot of opposition and stood his ground, because he knew he was right. He could not, would not, ignore the evidence.“

The Second Coming: Another Failed Promise (2000) “Preterists constantly accuse futurists of evasion and of dismissing the clear meaning of such passages as those I have cited above, in favour of a soo-n return of Jesus. But on the other hand, Preterists hyper-spiritualize whatever scriptures are in their way. What’s that old French proverb again? Oh yes… “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose!” Preterists, who accuse their “brethren” of being dishonest with the Scriptures, end up doing exactly the same thing. “

If Hyper-Preterism is True (2009) “I was appalled when I read this chapter because Green blatantly denies the Reformed doctrine of Justification. When I was a full-preterist, I naively anticipated the publication of House Divided, a book green calls “Reformed/Calvinist”.. Back then, some conservative full-preterists still vehemently defended all the doctrines of Grace (the very Gospel that delivered our souls), and kept our soteriology and our eschatology in separate compartments. There are many points that I have not included here. I will address them as the Lord permits over the next few months. D. 70. 2] No basic orthodox belief within Christianity has ever allowed for any other type of resurrection than a bodily one. 3] all historical basic orthodox beliefs within Christianity speak of the universal, personal judgment of all men, not of a representative judgment in A. D. 70.”

A New Position – Covenant Preterism (2010; no longer available) “Although I have been vocal about my views at this time, I wanted to publish a blog publicly notating the change of my personal doctrinal statement. In the last few months I have been in depth into the studies of Full Preterism, and have come to the conclusion, based on Max King and others during the 1970’s and 80’s Full Preterist work, I can only and personally attribute it to erroneous. Since I cannot, without any doubt, retract back to any other understanding that isn’t preterist centered, I must confirm my view as to be one that is imbedded into the historical church, as stated by the apostolic and pre Nicene fathers in a post 70 AD world. It is their understanding of the Biblical texts that deserve much attention, as their proximity to the era that ended in 70 CE to be of utmost importance. Therefore, I have taken a Covenant centered preterism as represented by the apostolic and historic church of Christianity. Furthermore, I have also decided to join the Roman Catholic Church based on their preteristic principles that have been laid out over the last 2 millennia.”

Gnostic Ties to Hyperpreterism – A Review of Sam Frost’s “Essay’s on the Resurrection of the Dead” (2009) “Sam Frost, a leading proponent of hyperpreterism has redefined the nature of the resurrection of the dead along Gnostic lines.. For Wright, the passages of Mk 13, and Mt 24, 25 are fulfilled by the time of A.D.70, the ‘end of the age’….Amazingly, however, Wright does not include the resurrection of the dead in any of the above passages. It is clear that in his analysis of 1 Co 15 the resurrection, parousia, and ultimate defeat of death (which he takes as physical death), are yet still future events.. After making this comment, he never reviews any of Wright’s exegesis of 1 Cor 15 to determine why it is Wright doesn’t make the connection between the Olivet discourse and 1 Cor 15. I think I know why, Wright’s argument is too solid for Frost to attack in his glossed over “analysis” of the text. I recommend the reader examine Wright’s argument to see why I believe that this is the case.”

Preterism’s Hopeless Belief (2008) “Preterism removes the comfort and hope of the return of Christ. It relinquishes to the past any thought of Messieh’s return. It is an empty and void Gospel which has destroyed many homes and churches because of it’s damnable lies. The truth is, as a former full and partial preterist, I know and see for myself the damage this lie does. It eliminates hope, peace, and future glory with Christ. Full is far worse than partial, because it outright denies the resurrection. What a lie!” // My blog about coming out from false doctrine, and into Kingdom reality (2006) “I wanted it to be public that I renounce my full preterist position.. It is not as if prophecy is a salvation issue, but just wanted to share this.”
Brian Simmons
-
Why Hyper Preterism Teaches a Different Gospel (2009) “Firstly, the concept of “salvation” endorsed by Hyper-Preterism is radically different from that which Futurists espouse. Historically, Christians have always believed that salvation involves redemption from the consequences of Adam’s fall. These include moral and physical death as well as indwelling sin. That is, we see the results of Adam’s fall as being not simply moral in nature, but physical and anthropological as well. Paul writes, again and again, that the “entire man” is covered by Christ’s redemptive plan (see 1 Thessalonians 5: 23; Romans 8: 11; 1 Corinthians 6: 13-20; Ephesians 1: 14).”
-
Up or Down? (2009) “Preterists do not generally recognize that Christ had already been exalted to the highest position in the heavenlies at His ascension in A.D. 30. A look at New Testament terminology confirms this. ..and so these verses tell us that Christ is now seated in the “above heavens,” exalted above the highest aristocracy of glory — not merely angels, but principalities and powers (Eph. 1: 20-22; 1 Peter 3: 22). If we take this exaltation as having been achieved in A.D. 30, then it is clear that upon His ascension there was no place higher for Him to go. “
-
What Hyper Preterists Don’t Want You To Know (2008) “The consistent Preterist view holds that all salvation was perfectly consummated in A.D. 70. Those born after A.D. 70 never needed salvation, for they were never under the Old Covenant. This is the dirty secret that Hyper-Preterists don’t want you to know about. Conservative Hyper-Preterists try to get around this evidence by stating that the application of realized eschatology is now individual.. Therefore, if Hyper-Preterism is true, all men must be saved. For the individual is really part of the universal. Therefore, the universal effects of an A.D. 70 general judgment would cover individuals living past that event.” /

2007: “After much “hemming and hawing” over the last several months, I’ve at last decided to reject “Full Preterism.” When I first accepted this system, I was looking for some answers– trying to tie up loose ends in my paradigm– and F.P. seemed to solve the problem. However, the more I’ve studied, the more contradictions I’ve found. It seems to me now that F.P. tends to completely cancel out the “everlasting Gospel” preached by Christ and the apostles. Not only that, but it squeezes Messianic prophecies into a pre-A.D. 70 fulfillment, and forces far-fetched and extremely hypothetical interpretations on Scripture. There are many more fatal errors in this system, and I hope to expose them all in due time. I’m no longer a full preterist.”

Christianity in the Nineteenth Century A Sermon in the Universalist Church of Charlestown, Mass,. Sunday Morning, September 26 (1852) “We, on the contrary, fulfill every thing by that magic phrase, “the destruction of Jerusalem.” But can we really and seriously refer these passages which I have quoted from Paul, to the destruction Jerusalem? Can we truly say that the rejection of the Jews and the calling of the Gentiles, let that mean what it may, exhausted all their meaning —the meaning which was the thought in Paul’s mind when he wrote them? I must confess I cannot” On leaving Preterist Universalism: “I fear that we are in a poor sickly way just now, by all I can read and hear. I fear we shall remain a sect without hope of ever being anything better. It does not look likely that the grub will ever come to be a butterfly.”

Reflections on the End of movements “I would, I guess, consider myself a cautious partial preterist, but no where near the “full” preterism I held in my (earlier) youth.. I remember some of the things that initially made me wary, while I was in the midst of being groomed as a future leader of the movement: sloppy exegesis and dependence on pagan thought for proof (one writer proved that the resurrection body was non-material by referencing, of all people, Plato…shudder). The fruits of that, I am finding out, are now becoming ever apparent. Universalism, the doctrine that all people are saved–whether just by existing or through the remedial means of post-mortem purgatory–is becoming popular and widespread amongst preterists.. This, and the fact that some non-universalist preterists claim that a “secret Rapture” occurred in AD 70, seals the coffin lid for me. ” – Withdrawals of a Theological Junkie (Russell Warren)
ON THE UNNATURAL PULL OF HYPER PRETERISM
The transition from the HyP pond to the Christian sea takes time and is often very difficult (it took me about eight years). The absolute difficulty of leaving sight-based theology can be truly appreciated only once one is fully free of its pull. All former full preterists know how strong is the pull of that system — think Death Star. Though full preterists want formers to keep a respectful quiet, this is hardly possible for those who have earned their independence to remain quiet about the wonders taking place in them.
Those who publicly write during this transition period are to be commended (not attacked!). The sincerity of so many of these writings cannot be denied — even (especially) if the doctrine will be denied. As a new hermeneutic is constructed according to greater revelation, there will be false starts and such ( formers are peppered with as many questions by HyPs, as HyPs are by Dispensationalists), but the tenacity of approach is to be admired.
Those writings are very special, and will be archived here so that they may serve to blaze trails for those who follow that path.
